In a lecture titled "Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead", Dr N. T. Wright, Bishop of Durham in the Church of England, answers the question "What really happened on that first Easter day?" He develops his thought around three sub-questions:

  • What were the Jewish and non Jewish beliefs about the resurrection during that period of history?
  • How did first century Christians themselves understand and respond to Christ's resurrection?
  • What can be learned about the resurrection of Christ from history?

Dr. N. T. Wright's conference is followed by his answering specific questions from the crowd:

  • Were there some aspects of the resurrection of Christ that you found more difficult to wrestle with than others?
  • Why is so much effort made to deny the resurrection of Christ?
  • What are we to make of the ending of Mark (shorter vs longer)?
  • What place should the resurrection have in our preaching of the Gospel?
  • Should we not see women as having been the first evangelists?
  • Could it be that a woman, not a man, would have written the Gospel of Mark?
  • Where does the rapture fit into the eschatological biblical teaching?

Please feel free to share with us some elements of this conference that you found particularly interesting or useful to your understanding of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, or of its importance for us Christians living today?
