How Can we Grow in our Understanding of the Deep Wonders of the Cross?
I invite you to listen with me to a short ten-minute interview with Dr John Piper answering as he answers a question by someone listening to a previous podcast, How Do I Survey All the Deep Wonders of the Cross? , available from DesiringGod.org.
Here is an extract from the podcast's introduction transcript that will help you understand where this interview is going: Austin, a listener in Atlanta, writes in: “Hello Pastor John! When asked about the significance of the cross, most Christians can give the Sunday school answer that ‘Jesus died to save us from sin.’ While this is a beautiful, true, and profound truth, it can sometimes appear simple and one-dimensional. How would you encourage me to have an enlarged view of the cross? How can I approach God’s Word and life in a way that continually broadens my understanding and love for that pivotal moment in history?” After reformulating the question in these terms: "How can we approach God’s Word, how can we approach life, so that this deepening, widening, heightening of our experience of, understanding of, love for the cross happens?" Dr. Piper provides an answer along the lines of the following structure: (1) linger over and meditate regularly on passages such as Galatians 6:14 where we are exhorted to boast in the cross of Christ; (2) make it your habit to sing great old hymns and good modern worship songs that are cross-centered and Bible-saturated, with the gospel of Christ; (3) meditate on the dozens and dozens of passages in the New Testament that talk about the varied purposes for the death of Jesus.
What stands out for you as most helpful to help you delve deeper in your understanding of the full significance of the death of Christ on the cross? Please feel free to share your thoughts as you interact with Dr. John Piper's teaching on the cross.
